Jillian Lauren, the true-crime author and wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot by Los Angeles police in a bizarre standoff and arrested Tuesday, and has since been accused of attempted murder.

According to a press release issued by the Los Angeles Police Department on Wednesday, the convoluted incident began when three suspects in a misdemeanor hit-and-run allegedly fled the scene of a traffic accident on the 134 Freeway and escaped into a residential area in the neighborhood of Eagle Rock. Police say that they established a perimeter on Waldo Place after one of the suspects was allegedly spotted there, and that a nearby homeowner, later identified as Lauren, walked out of her house with a handgun.

Lauren, 51, also known as Jillian Shriner, was warned to drop the weapon but refused and eventually pointed the gun toward officers, authorities allege. The press release states that Lauren “was struck by gunfire” in “an Officer-Involved Shooting” and retreated into her home before returning outside, where she was taken into custody. Paramedics transported her to a hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The LAPD says that Lauren, who was ultimately determined to have no connection to the initial hit-and-run incident, was absentee booked for attempted murder. Jail records reviewed by Entertainment Weekly indicate that her bail was set at $1 million.

Representatives for Lauren and Weezer didn’t immediately respond to EW’s requests for comment.

Lauren is the author of two New York Times best-selling memoirs, 2010’s Everything You Ever Wanted and 2015’s Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, the latter of which chronicled her time as a concubine of Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei.

In 2021, she starred in the Starz docuseries Confronting a Serial Killer, which centers on the serial killer Samuel Little. Lauren also wrote a 2023 book about Little, Behold the Monster: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer.
