Green Day poke fun at Will Smith for AI-generated fan video

Green Day have poked fun at Will Smith on social media, after an audience montage video of the actor’s recent tour appeared to be AI-generated and went viral online.

Smith is currently undertaking his ‘Based on a True Story’ tour, in support of his album of the same name, which dropped on March 28th. Despite the name of the album, the King Richard actor has not exactly been truthful in social media videos depicting his recent shows.

Ahead of his shows in the UK, which kicked off in Scarborough on August 24th, the artist shared a video on his official YouTube channel, with the caption “My favourite part of tour is seeing you all up close. Thank you for seeing me too.”

Despite his earnest tone, fans were quick to point out AI hallmarks throughout the video, which shows various crowd shots. Some viewers pointed out the strange, misshapen hands and extra fingers of concertgoers, and misspelt signs, one of which read “FR6SH CRINCE”.

Green Day has weighed in on the debate when posting their own audience footage. In a video depicting fans at the barrier singing along to their tune ‘Basket Case’. They cheekily captioned the video, “Don’t need AI for our crowds.”

To investigate the true source of the video, Far Out sent the footage to Jesse Glass, the lead AI researcher at DecideAI, who analysed the clip. He said, “It’s possible to train AI models to detect if a video clip is an output of the model; however, it requires access to the model and tons of generated content and not generated content.”

Glass added, “As a viewer, it shows several characteristics in the clips: their length, their movement, the lack of audio, and the people’s expressions that lend strength to the suspicion that this reel was augmented with AI clips.”

Smith is not the only musician to be accused of AI usage. Recently, Rod Stewart came under fire for displaying an AI-generated video of Ozzy Osbourne posing for selfies with various dead musicians during his recent tour.
