Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong kicks fan off stage for playing Oasis

by Nicolas

By now, Green Day fans should’ve somehow realized that playing “Wonderwall” at their concert is something you’re not to do.

As part of their ongoing Saviors tour, the beloved Bay Area rockers have started inviting concert attendees on stage to play guitar with them during their performance of their 1997 hit “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” However, the usually heartwarming moment quickly spun off the rails at the band’s concert in Luxembourg on Sunday when the chosen fan decided to play the opening chords of the Oasis megahit instead.

The moment, which was captured on video and posted on social media, came after lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong attempted to teach the excited fan — who claimed to know “Good Riddance” — the song’s chords. When he played “Wonderwall” instead, Armstrong could be heard in the clip exclaiming, “Oh, f‑‑‑ me!”

And that was that for Armstrong. Without another word, the frontman can be seen in a second clip taking the acoustic guitar away and strapping it on himself. Although the fan appears to try and rectify the situation by talking with Armstrong, he is ultimately given the ax and led off stage by security.

“Nice try,” Armstrong tells the fan as he departs. “Wrong song.” He then begins playing the correct track.

The moment has divided observers online, with some coming to the fan’s defense and noting that “Wonderwall” and Green Day’s track “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” are composed of the same chords.

Another person firmly in the fan’s corner? Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, who weighed in on the kerfuffle in a social media post and called the fan’s quick performance of their hit the “best song of the night.”

Others, however, called out the fan for wasting the “chance of a lifetime” to perform with Green Day. “No, he knew what he did. unspoken rule; no wonderwall,” a user commented. Another claimed that the two bands “don’t have a good history” together and equated the performance to “a slap in the face.”

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has spoken out about his disdain for Green Day’s music over the years.

“Rock music, or whatever you wanna call it, it seems to be a lot of shouting about some unspecified injustice that’s going on… Green Day, what are they on about?” he told Virgin Radio Breakfast in 2017. “Do you know what I mean? It’s kind of like rock has killed rock ‘n’ roll, almost.”

Perhaps the fan was just excited for the upcoming Oasis reunion tour, which officially kicks off Friday in Cardiff, Wales. The global tour will see the Gallagher brothers reunite on stage for the first time in 15 years, and hopefully perform a few fan favorites like “Wonderwall” along the way.

Green Day, meanwhile, will continue on their global Saviors tour, with upcoming performances scheduled in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Greece.
