Keanu Reeves to play villain in new Weezer movie

John Wick star Keanu Reeves has been cast as the villain in rock band Weezer’s upcoming movie, which is currently in production.

Details surrounding the mysterious project remain under wraps, but it appears that it will be taking form in the shape of a mockumentary. According to a new report by The Insneider, it has been compared to a mix of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

The movie is set to also feature Juliette Lewis, Eric Andre, Johnny Knoxville, Ben Schwartz, and Weezer themselves. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are on directorial duties for the movie.

Reeves has a storied history with Weezer that dates back more than three decades, which makes him ripe for a role in the film, as they have a real-life tale to loosely base the story around. Their first concert was supporting the actor’s band, Dogstar, in 1992, and in 2024, Dogstar served as the opener for Weezer in 2024.

Last weekend, Weezer performed at Coachella as a last-minute replacement, and singer Rivers Cuomo explained Weezer couldn’t resist the opportunity to perform in the desert despite their busy schedule due to the movie. He told fans before playing ‘Undone (The Sweater Song)’, “We’ve been busy making the Weezer movie back in LA the last couple weeks.”

Cuomo continued: “But when Coachella called us up, said, ‘Hey Weezer, could you guys make it out for a surprise appearance?,’ we’re like, ‘Heck yeah!’ It feels so good to be here with you guys and let out these emotions.”

Additionally, the band’s close associate, Karl Koch, recently invited members of their fan club to a “private filmed merchandise signing” for a “TBA video” in Los Angeles on April 21st.

Koch wrote: “This is your chance to say hello to the band and get something signed in an exclusive private setting and hopefully be in the video to boot!…Fans should bring their own merch for autographing. Note that this will involve serval hours of ‘waiting in line’ for the camera crew’s needs.”

Currently, there is no information on when Weezer’s movie is scheduled for release.
