After 14 years, the Nirvana exhibition at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle is set to close later this month.
The highly popular exhibition, which has become a rite of passage for Nirvana fans, is titled Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses, and first opened its doors in 2011. It’s a celebration of both the band’s story, as well as the wider Seattle scene that birthed the rock heroes.
However, it will be no more. The Museum of Pop Culture said in a statement: “After 14 years at MOPOP, Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses is set to close on September 7, 2025, to make way for a future exhibition exploring the myriad music scenes and musicians of the Pacific Northwest across decades and genres.”
Reassuring fans, the institution promised to continue to honour the group, adding, “Nirvana and the legacy of grunge have always been at the heart of MOPOP—and that will never change. More to come on our future music exhibition soon!”
Before the Museum of Pop Culture waves goodbye to Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses, it will host a farewell event on September 6th.
It promises to be an occasion “that’s pure grunge spirit”, explaining, “Think live T-shirt printing with The Vera Project, DIY zines with Push/Pull, button-making, film screenings, confessional videos, and a panel of Seattle music scene veterans discussing the multi-decade impact of the early ’90s Grunge explosion.” The event begins at 11:00am local time and will end at 16:00pm.
Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses isn’t the only exhibition honouring the grunge icons and their late frontman, Kurt Cobain. The Royal College of Music in London is currently hosting Kurt Cobain Unplugged, which explores the story behind the guitar he used for their legendary MTV Unplugged performance, and is set to be on exhibition until November 18th.
