Vans’ experimental streak is bringing a simple but unmissable additions to one of its classic low-profile sneakers.
The Vans OTW Slip-On 98 Knot sees the laceless add two fat ropes tied into a figure 8 knot above its tongue. This type of knot is commonly used in sailing, which connects the new look to Vans’ early focus on making deck shoes before finding a new audience in skateboarders.
Two colorways with different materials available for the Slip-On with a heavyweight canvas upper. Heavyweight canvas is used for the “Daphne Blue” edition, which deviates in color for its branding. Black shaggy suede is then used for the other variant, which gets a white sole with black striping.
Both editions feature a Vibram outsole for more durability than your standard pair of Vans, and comfort is prioritized with an upgraded footbed and Sola Foam All-Day Comfort insole.
Vans launched the Slip-On and Old Skool in 1977, making them older than all other models beside the Era and Authentic. The former’s popularity blossomed with its appearance five years later in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” as Sean Penn’s character Spicoli slapped the shoe on the side of his head and said, “I’m so wasted.”
Just this week, Vans launched another iteration of the Slip-On for its third capsule of sneakers inspired by Chanel bags. A diamond quilted leather upper is modeled after Chanel’s historic 2.55 bag and comes after last year’s smash hit Old Skool “Souvenir” was modeled after the 1015 Graffiti bag.
The Vans OTW Slip-On 98 Knot will release Tuesday through Vans’ website and select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $110.
