Vans had one of the revered sneaker releases not through a collaboration, but from an in-line Old Skool “Souvenir” design inspired by Chanel‘s famed Graffiti bag. Coming off of that success, the brand has now added a sneaker inspired by yet another Chanel bag — as well as another sneaker inspired by it.
The Vans Slip-On Quilted looks to the staple Chanel bags with the same diamond quilting and Don C’s Air Jordan 2 as source material. Available in either or pink or black, the sneaker utilzes quilted leather on its vamp and heel and smooth leather for its collar. Leather lining then arrives in navy for the black pair or brown for pink, while white is used for the elastic band, Vans hangtag and the midsole’s heel branding.
Chanel first made the 2.55 in February 1955 and named it after its month and year of origin. Coco Chanel had equestrianism in mind with stablehand jackets and riding coats and was also inspired by cushions in her apartment. Karl Lagerfeld reinterpreted the design as the Classic Flap in 1983, and its remained a fixture since while being renamed the 11.12 in 2021.
Greg Betty is behind the designs of the Chanel-inspired Vans capsules, which also included an Authentic invoking the 2016 La Habana bag, and although he’s no longer with the company, he’s shared the origins of his work as the sneakers continue to release. Ironically, given the role of the opulent Air Jordan 2 in this capsule, Betty is now working at Jordan Brand.
The Vans Slip-On Quilted is out now in its pink and black colorways on Vans’ website. Pricing is set at $95.
