Wife of Weezer bassist makes court appearance after shooting

Jillian Lauren, the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner and a best-selling author, made her first appearance in court after allegedly shooting at the Los Angeles Police Department on April 8th.

Lauren was arrested for attempted murder after firing in the direction of officers. It came after the police were scouring the area for an unrelated hit-and-run suspect. Footage from her home surveillance and police body cams shows Lauren holding and firing a gun, though there is no sound on the footage. Police tell Lauren to drop the gun approximately a dozen times amid the stand-off. Lauren reportedly aimed at the officers after refusing to heed this warning. As heard in the footage, as soon as an officer noted, “Oh, she racked it”, the police opened fire. They unloaded over six shots, one of which found its way into Lauren’s arm.

By the time of her appearance in court, the Los Angeles County district attorney had not filed any charges. The judge ordered her to return on May 13th. Lauren declined to comment as she left the Clara Shortridge Foltz criminal courthouse in downtown LA alongside her lawyer and several supporters.

“The matter remains under investigation. A case has not been formally presented to the District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. Ms. Shriner remains out of custody on bond. A formal case presentation is anticipated within the next week. Our office will make a filing decision shortly thereafter,” DA spokesman Greg Risling told Rolling Stone.

After Lauren had been taken to the hospital to treat the non-threatening bullet wound in her arm, and after the police confirmed she was not the hit-and-run suspect they were searching for, Lauren was released on $1 million bail.

A recording from inside her home during the time between when Lauren allegedly fired at police and when she was arrested was released. There were multiple 911 calls relating to the incident. In one of them, an individual tells the operator that Lauren was shot by one of the suspects in the manhunt. Lauren is heard talking in the background. “I had my gun, and he said, ‘Put down that gun. Put down that gun.’ I said, ‘Put down your fucking gun.’ And then he shot me,” Lauren says. “There are three men out at the other side of this fence here.”

Amidst this controversy, Weezer still played a Coachella set on April 12th, but the band did not acknowledge the situation. The bassist only released a brief statement to confirm he would still take to the stage and to thank the public for their support before simply adding, “She’s alright”, regarding his wife’s well-being.

Lauren is an author who has written two memoirs: 2010’s Some Girls: My Life in a Harem and 2015’s Everything You Ever Wanted. She has been married to Weezer’s Scott Shriner since 2005 and shares two children with him.
